Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE)

An octane-enhancing oxygen-containing component is used to increase the octane number of gasolines.

Oxygenated compounds are typically high octane numbers, up to 100 according to the research method.

Among them, methyl tert-butyl ether (2-methyl-2-methoxypropane, MTBE) is distinguished by good efficiency, its octane number of mixing, depending on the component composition of gasoline, can reach 135.

When using MTBE, the addition of a homogenizer is not required in order to avoid the separation of the aqueous phase, because MTBE dissolves exclusively in gasoline.
The addition of methyl tert-butyl ether gives the most complete combustion of motor fuel without the formation of solid carbon deposits on the cylinder walls of the internal combustion engine. The process of gasoline production using MTBE is extremely simple - mechanical mixing of low-octane gasoline and additives.

The disadvantage of MTBE is the need to enter significant amounts of it to achieve the required octane number of gasoline (10-15%).
