Orthoxylene (o-xylene)

It increases the octane number well, its properties are similar to the oil solvent. Mixes well with acetone, alcohols, ethers. Not miscible with water.

It is used to dissolve nitrocellulose, chlorinated rubber, various polymers (acrylic, epoxy, vinyl, organosilicon). Thinner for urea and melamine-formaldehyde materials.

Orthoxylene is used for degreasing various surfaces, and in the composition of paints and varnishes it can replace petroleum solvent.
As a result of the oxidation reaction of orthoxylene in the vapor phase at t 450-600 ° C, phthalic anhydride is obtained, and with deep oxidation of petroleum orthoxylene, under the influence of nitric acid or atmospheric oxygen in the liquid phase at t 100-300 ° C and a pressure of 4 MPa (as catalysts are bromides, or Mn or Co) phthalic acid is obtained.

It is used in the production of plastic for cables, linoleum.

All work with orthoxylene should be carried out in a well-ventilated area. As a result of overflow, mixing, etc. electrostatic charges can build up. Store away from strong acids and oxidizing agents.

ATTENTION! It is necessary to work with orthoxylol and solvents based on it in rubber gloves resistant to their effects, always under traction and in a well-ventilated area.
